The medicated feed is prepared from an already formulated feed and the drug by:

• Soaking the feed pellets into a solution of the drug while mixing for a time period sufficient for the sorption of the drug into the bulk of the feed;
• Evaporating the solvent until dryness while maintaining mixing;
• Recovering the solvent during evaporation and recycling the solvent.

Apparatus

 A closed apparatus is used that allows for gentle mixing at atmospheric pressure and drying under vacuum.  

• Lab and pilot scale preparation can be performed in Buchi rotavapors. 
• Suitable industrial scale apparatus has been identified.  The double cone vacuum dryer can soak and mix gently the pellets with the drug solution.  Nitrogen purge can be included during unloading the vessel.  Solvent condenser and collector are part of the vacuum system. 

Safety

• The cross-contamination of non-medicated feed is excluded.   Feed medication is performed in an equipment that is separated and independently operated from the feed production line.  This is in compliance with the regulations of many countries that require the separation of feed medication from the feed production.
• The closed system, including the solvent handling and recycling, assures an occupationally and environmentally safe production.
